Adze or Adz

  • Gransfors Bruks pronounced: (Gransfors Brooks) ...hand forged (with machine assist).
    • Swedish made, each piece stamped with the Smith's initials for reference.
  • Oxhead (Oshenkopf)...drop forged
    • German made.

An edge tool used to cut and shape wood 

A carpenter's or cooper's tool, formed with a thin arching
blade set at right angles to the handle. It is used for
chipping or slicing away the surface of wood.

Note: A 'Flat' adze is flat side to side, however, there is a slight curve from front to back.

Gransfors Bruks-Hand Adze

Also called a one-handed adze...available in either curved or flat profiles.

8" handle length gives you just enough space for one or both hands. 

Comes surprisingly sharp. With leather sheath.

As with all Gransfors Bruks tools-this one is top quality. You'll keep this one forever. It's about as good as a tool gets.

Curved (gutter) adze: 3-1/4" wide blade on 26" axe style handle (not a straight handle)...the droop (curve) is similar to the short handled version above (although wider). Approximately a # 6 sweep.
Flat adze: 3" blade, 23" handle, 25" overall length.

  • The flat lip adze is used primarily for hewing large amount of wood. Available in two widths...85mm and 95mm
  • The curved lip adze is for hollowing out chair seats or other "hollowing out" tasks, or to give a pronounced adzed effect for decorative purposes...curved lip adze is also known as a gutter (as they were used to make wooden gutters), hollow, or curved adze
